Jayme Mestieri is an artist based in São Paulo, Brazil. His practice explores portraiture through drawing, working with ink, charcoal, and pastel. His background in architecture informs his sense of structure and composition, while drawing gives space to intuition, uncertainty, and experimentation.

Artist statement

My work is rooted in portraiture — not as a finished image, but as an open field of observation and interpretation. I am interested in the moment before resolution, when the drawing is still unfolding and the gesture reveals thought, hesitation, and presence.

Rather than producing traditional or decorative artworks, I approach drawing as a form of visual investigation. My subjects emerge from everyday life — unposed, unstaged, often unnoticed. What interests me is this natural state, where people exist without performance.

My background in architecture informs my sense of structure and composition, but drawing is where I allow freedom. If architecture demands clarity, drawing embraces intuition, uncertainty, and experimentation. I am drawn to sketches and preliminary moments, where thought remains visible and the image is still becoming.

I avoid rigid systems or formal grids. My lines form an intuitive network, guided more by rhythm than precision. The image grows organically, as something discovered rather than constructed.

My work does not seek to deliver closed narratives. It operates closer to a form of visual journalism — not objective, but subjective — where observation is filtered through memory and perception. Each drawing is a fragment of a broader, unfinished narrative.

Working primarily with ink and charcoal, I embrace immediacy. The line is exposed, not corrected. The drawing reveals its own construction — pauses, tensions, and gestures — where the act of drawing becomes as important as the image itself.
